Struggling With Self-Doubt? How to Own Your Expertise with Confidence

Written By Donna-Marie  |  Mindset

This may come as a surprise to you, Gorgeous, but did you know that many business owners and industry experts are actually struggling with self-doubt?

We often think that we're the only ones facing this challenge, while everyone else — especially those we look up to — are breezing through their days dripping with self-confidence. But that's not the case. Far from it, in fact.

Let me explain...

Struggling With Self-Doubt

Are You Owning Your Expertise Or Struggling With Self-Doubt?

What comes to mind when you hear the word expert?

Do you picture someone with a Ph.D. or decades of experience?

Or do you picture yourself?

If you hesitate to put your name under the “Expert” heading, it’s time for a mindset shift.

Think about your own journey — your education, your training, your experiences and the work you’ve done with clients. You’ve spent time researching, writing blog posts, taking courses and continuously expanding your knowledge.

Does the average person do that?

No. Many people read casually about topics they find interesting, but they don’t dedicate themselves to mastering a subject and helping others the way you do.

Here’s the truth: If you have paying clients, chances are that you’re an expert.

Overcoming Negative Self-Talk

If you’ve ever coached clients on overcoming self-doubt, you know how powerful negative self-talk can be. But do you follow your own advice?

Do you find yourself questioning your path, wondering why others seem to have it all figured out while you’re still working through challenges?

If so, you’re not alone. Every successful entrepreneur, coach and business owner has experienced moments of doubt. But here’s the key difference: The successful ones don’t let it hold them back.

Instead of sinking under the weight of self-doubt, take an action step:

  • Send an email to your list.
  • Engage with your social media followers.
  • Write a blog post.

Ask yourself, "If I was the best in the world at what I do, how would I feel about my expertise? What would I do right now?" Then, go do that thing or the closest you can to it.

Each of these tasks reinforces your expertise while keeping you moving forward. Focus on serving others rather than getting lost in comparison. As the saying goes, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” You don’t know how many hurdles another expert had to jump to get where they are today.

Embracing Your Expertise

According to Dictionary.com, an expert is “a person who has a comprehensive and authoritative knowledge of or skill in a particular area.” Nowhere does it say that you need a specific degree or credential to be considered an expert (except for certain licensed professions like medicine or law).

In many industries, experience and results speak louder than certifications. Some of the most successful coaches and business owners have built their expertise through hands-on work rather than formal education. That doesn’t mean certifications and training aren’t valuable — they can certainly add credibility — but they aren’t the only path to becoming an authority in your field.

Your expertise comes from:

  • The knowledge you’ve accumulated through study and research.
  • The results you’ve helped clients achieve.
  • The passion and dedication you have for your field.
  • The content and advice you share to educate and inspire others.

You are an expert. The sooner you embrace that, the sooner you’ll be able to show up with confidence and attract the clients who need you.

How To Own Your Expertise

If you still struggle with imposter syndrome, try these simple shifts to fully step into your expert role:

1. Acknowledge Your Wins

Make a list of your accomplishments, big and small. Have you helped a client achieve a breakthrough? Written an insightful blog post? Delivered a powerful presentation? These are all signs of your expertise.

2. Speak With Confidence

When talking about your work, avoid phrases like “I’m trying to…” or “I’m just starting out.” Instead, say “I help [your audience] achieve [specific result].” Stand behind your knowledge with certainty.

3. Create And Share More Content

Experts share their knowledge. Whether through blog posts, videos, social media, or email newsletters, the more you teach and provide value, the more you reinforce your credibility.

4. Stop Comparing Yourself To Others

Someone else’s success doesn’t diminish your own. Instead of focusing on what they’re doing, channel that energy into refining your own message and impact.

5. Take Action Daily

Confidence comes from action. The more you show up, the more natural it will feel to own your expertise.

You Are More Than Enough

No more waiting for permission to call yourself an expert, okay?

No more doubting your abilities just because you don’t have a certain certification. You’ve put in the work, you’ve helped others and you have valuable knowledge to share.

It’s time to silence the negative self-talk and own your expertise. The people who need you aren’t looking for someone with the fanciest credentials. They’re looking for someone who understands them, speaks their language and can genuinely help them move forward.

That person is YOU. xo 🌸
