You Don’t Have To Build Your Business Like Everyone Else
Have you ever noticed that there’s a strange pressure in the online business world — a kind of unspoken rulebook about how you “should” do things? Things such as, you should:
...post every day.
...launch big.
...scale fast.
...hustle hard.
...build a business that looks just like the one that influencer/coach/strategist you follow on Instagram has.
And if you’ve ever tried to follow all those rules and ended up feeling exhausted, overwhelmed or totally disconnected from your own vision, I want you to know:
It doesn’t have to be that way.
Your business should feel like you.
It should fit your life, not take it over.
It should support your well-being, not sacrifice it.
And yes — it can be both soulful and successful.
Why This Matters So Much More Than People Realise
The truth is, if your business doesn’t feel aligned, it will always feel hard.
Even when things are working on paper, you’ll feel tired. Uninspired. Resentful. Confused about why success doesn’t feel like success.
On the other hand, when your business reflects who you really are and supports the life you want to live…
- Marketing feels easier (because you’re just being yourself).
- Clients feel like kindred spirits, not energy drains.
- Your work feels sustainable — like something you can actually keep doing long term.
- You stop comparing and start creating.
And that, in my opinion, is what freedom is.
What A Business That Feels Like You Might Look Like
Let’s break it down with a few practical shifts you can make to create a business that feels more aligned with you:
1. Build around your energy and lifestyle — not someone else’s schedule
Are you a morning person or a slow starter?
Do you love group work or prefer 1:1 connections?
Do you thrive in flowy blocks of time or short, structured sprints?
When you understand your natural energy and preferences, you can design your business hours, offers and delivery style to match.
No more fighting your own rhythm just to tick the productivity boxes.
2. Choose business models that light you up (not just the ones trending)
Some people love live launching. Others prefer evergreen funnels.
Some thrive with digital products. Others love deep coaching or retreats.
There’s no one-size-fits-all business model — and the right one for you is the one that aligns with:
- Your strengths
- Where you're at in life
- Your values and goals
The important point is that YOU get to design this YOUR way.
3. Create offers that reflect your heart and zone of genius
You don’t have to teach what everyone else is teaching.
You don’t have to follow formulas that don’t feel good.
When you tap into your real strengths and passions — the things you could talk about for hours and love helping people with — your offers feel magnetic.
And marketing them is so much easier.
Now of course, you still need to research your market and make sure that you have a viable business model with products or services that people want to pay for, but there are so many options for the type of business you can run that you can still find something that is profitable AND works for you.
4. Speak your truth in your own voice
You don’t have to sound like anyone else.
You don’t have to be loud if you’re naturally soft. (It took me a while to realise this!)
And you don’t have to be polished if you’re more relaxed and conversational.
Your audience is craving realness. The more “you” you bring into your brand — your stories, values, quirks, experiences — the more your people will connect with you.
5. Simplify ruthlessly
A business that feels good is usually a business that’s not over-complicated.
That means:
- Fewer platforms
- Clearer offers
- Less content, more intention
- Systems and automations that do the heavy lifting
- And, depending on your business model, you may decide to build a team around you, whether employees or contractors.
Simplicity is a secret superpower. When you stop trying to do all the things and focus on doing the right things, everything flows better.
My Own Journey To Alignment
I’ll be honest — it took me a while to learn all this.
In the early years, I tried to follow what the experts said. I said yes to everything. I offered too many services. And I said yes when I wanted to say no. I looked around for permission or proof that I was doing it “right.”
And I burned out more than once. (Trust me, falling to the floor unconscious late at night and being rushed to hospital is not fun!)
But as I simplified, clarified and realigned my business to actually reflect me… things shifted.
I started attracting more of the right people.
I felt more spacious.
And I began to actually enjoy running my business again.
That journey of realignment is exactly why I wrote my book START: The Solopreneur’s Blueprint For Building Your Dream Business.
It’s not about hustle or icky strategies. It’s a heart-centered, practical guide to creating a business that truly fits you — whether you're just starting out or rebuilding in a new direction.
You’re Allowed To Do It Differently
So if you’re finding yourself frustrated with strategies that don’t feel good…
If you’re building a business that “works,” but doesn’t feel aligned…
Or if you’re longing for more joy, more spaciousness and more you-ness in your work…
...you are allowed to do it differently.
You’re allowed to:
- Slow down
- Pivot
- Change your offers
- Streamline
- Simplify
- Redefine success
- Make your business feel like a beautiful extension of you
Because when you do that — when you build from the inside out — everything gets easier. More joyful. More sustainable.
